High school students¡¯ knowlege and attitude toward the nursing profession

Abstract
Nursing is changing into community health nursing and away frorn traditionally sicknessoriented nursing. This is to meet the health needs of the whole community-population and to promote and maintain a better health welfare service. To care for them comprehensively, the community has need of many competent nurses. In order to secure this development, many students of high ability among high school students who will go on to college should be instructed and encouraged to choose and major in nursing. In order to encourage them do so this must be preceded by proper understanding toward the nursing profession. This survey was done for obtaining some basic data for this purpose. The results of the survey are as follows ; A. General characteristics ; 1. 50.3% had no religion. 26.1% were protestants. 2. 50.6% of them were born and reared in big cities. 3. 26.3% of them were born as the fiffh child or later, and 21.8% were born first in order of birth. 4. The highest distribution of educational background of parents was high school graduate. (39.9%) 5. The highest distribution of family with them own monthly income was between 100.00-200.000 won(41.3%), 37.2% of them have 300.000-400.000 won. B. Characteristics of the subjects who want to major in nursing at college ; 1. 35.2% of the rotal subjects responded positively. 2. Highest distributed groups were ; 1) Catholics. (46.9%) 2) Parents who graduated from middle school. (41.7%)
3) Of those with low family monthly income. (Lower than 100.000 won ; 50%, between 100.000-200.000 won:37.5%) 4) Having a school record of a little below average. (Above 40 grade in their class : 47.5%, above 30 grade in their class : 37.8%) 3. 36.3% of them responded that they would consult with a family member who is working in the nursing field. 4. 43% of them responded that the main reason for choosing to major in nursing is that they would like to serve mankind. 5. 45.3% of them responded that they want to know about nurse¡¯s role. 6. The subjects indicated the following characteristics which nurses should have ; 1) Perseverance : 83.1% 2) Responsibility : 82.7% 3) Spirit of co-operation : 42.2% 4) Discretion : 38% 5) Self-confidence : 36.6% 7. As for the ability nurses should have they indicated as follows ; 1) Ability of analysis : 94.4% 2) Ability of synthesis : 94.4% 3) Ability of appilication : 89.3% 4) Judgement : 74.8% 8. 52.9% of them responded that nurses act partially as doctors directed and partially by their own judgement. 9. 77.8% of them responded that nursing is a specialized profession. 10. 48.3% of them responded that they have never had an opportunity to learn about nursing. 11. 36.7% of them responded that they heard of nursing through their school teachers. 12. Regarding the question of nursing philosophy, 55.8% of them responded that nurses should have a special love for humanity. 13. Regarding the question of what they would do if they were given the opportunity to study nursing, of those who responded negatively to the first survey, 67.4% of them responded positively on the second survey
